Personal and property safety is a very important issue that companies deal with in general. Some recent examples where proper safety systems were not in place include the fires that that took place in the Joelma and Andraus buildings, and more recently the disaster at the Kiss night club in the city of Santa Maria in Rio Grande do Sul. Not only these accidents that were caused by fires, but many others that have not been publicly disclosed, could have been avoided if safety norms had been followed, a thorough risk analysis, and the design of equipment, processes and construction had been more rigorously considered. A tool that can assist in the design of interiors with the purpose of reducing risks by fires, explosions, poisoning by toxic gases, asphyxia, among others is Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Through CFD, it is possible to perform computer simulations with the purpose of analyzing real situations for improving the places of work and leisure with the objective of reducing risks and avoiding disastrous situations. An example would be to simulate a gas leak that may take place in a given location of an industry. With the results from this simulation, it is possible to establish adequate positions for exhaust fans to decrease the concentration of gas indoors.
